What does it take to transform lives?

Amir Miah is a social entrepreneur who has fought against the odds not just to change his own future, but to transform the lives of those around him.

Growing up in a rough estate in London and having to sell stolen bikes just to provide himself with gym clothes that his parents couldn’t afford, he realised at a young age that he was going to have to find a way to create opportunity for himself.  At his school, kids were more likely to go to prison than to continue education. But Amir fought against his circumstance and, at 21 years old, has started his own company. Not to make money, but to do the right thing for his area.

Your Bike was set up to support young people’s employability by creating game-changing training and employment opportunities that suit different abilities, interests and needs. Amir talks about wanting to address the cycle of reoffending and lack of training and employment opportunities by creating a business that contributes this to the local community. Amir and his team now work with the Metropolitan Police to up-cycle stolen bikes, as well as providing repairs and bike workshops for the Poplar community.

Not only is fighting against tough circumstances difficult on its own, Amir made a harder choice in trying to find opportunity for everyone, not just himself.
